Melissa Balzan was incredibly approachable from the beginning to the end and always came back to the original brief of lightening everything up, improving functionality and keeping our large family home the place where our grown-up children and grandchildren love to catch up. I had a lot of stuff; sentimental stuff, that I couldn’t let go and wanted to work into the renovation. Melissa did that, as much as she could. Nothing was a problem. She really listened and worked with us.
Her attention to detail from flooring options, cabinetry, stonework, fittings, lighting, furniture to beautiful wall papers, fabrics and artwork, was quite incredible.
She has amazing design style and taste but her strength has to be the way she and her team work with a concept and over-deliver in the end result. For example, I especially enjoy the magic of a custom built display cabinet in what was a dreary corner. Our powder room is a delightful little visit and our kitchen was brilliantly thought out. I actually wonder if Melissa was a builder in a previous life because she just ‘gets it’, with creative flair, and is totally respected by the trades.
Our paths will continue to cross as I recommend Melissa Balzan to family and friends. She is the Master to call on!

Melissa Balzan was recommended to me by a friend, who has used her services for both her mother and sister. The brief I gave Melissa was to renew the interiors of our main residence in Glen Iris, with a French theme that has to achieve ‘luxe’ but comfortable for everyday living. Melissa determined that we had some exceptionally good pieces but needed to ‘shine’ through a difference location of furniture coupled with a full refreshment the colour scheme. Out was the red and orange, and entered the beautiful soft pinks, blues, and dark greys. Even paintings were commissioned for different rooms, which brought life to our spaces.
As I gained confidence with Melissa, I trusted her to undertake a simple refresh with our kitchen through removing the old fridge/pantry, and replacing the limited space with a beautiful sub-zero fridge and pantry with full pull-out draws. She was able to match the same profile as the current kitchen cupboards, but put some dazzle into the kitchen through a completely different colour. Not only did we gain much needed space in fridge and pantry, but the new colour scheme felt like an entire new kitchen.
Melissa suggested new bar stools that feel like I am sitting in a New York upmarket bar.
Melissa even refreshed our bed with a custom-design gas lift bed and covering. We adore this new bed and sleep better than ever.
And then we purchased a beach house. At this juncture, I gave Melissa complete creative licence.
I knew she had a skill with sourcing gorgeous fabrics, she knew what I liked and I wanted her creativity to shine. My beach house is my total happy place, and I love everything she has done. Not one piece of furniture is out of step with what we have achieved.
I have complete faith in all her recommendations. I adore working with her! I can’t recommend her high enough; simply the best interior decorator I have ever worked with.
